Nina Roper Yearwood (00:05)
Hello and welcome to a new episode of Copperberg Conversations on Manufacturing Matters. I’m Nina Roper Yearwood, coming to you from Germany. Whether you’re listening while commuting, enjoying your coffee break, or just winding down for the day, I’m so glad to have you here. Today’s episode is something special because we’re taking you inside the first ever Sustainability in Service Summit, which took place last December 2024. This was in Stockholm and it was attended by 50 hand-picked aftermarket and service leaders, all ready to dig deep into unlocking revenue streams through sustainable service models in the aftermarket.

So let’s rewind to that day and relive the key moments, conversations and insights that made this event so memorable.

Nina Roper Yearwood (01:03)
Before the main event, we kicked things off with a pre-event workshop hosted by Syncron. Their main theme was profit with a purpose. And what they did was a mix of presentations, brainstorming and hands-on activities.

And then, on the big day, amid a snowy Stockholm, a true winter wonderland, as the background. But inside the conference room, there was a different kind of energy. It was warm, buzzing and full of ideas. Everyone in the room was engaged and not just talking about sustainability, but mapping out strategies, setting KPIs and committing to real action.

Nina Roper Yearwood (01:51)
In a bit, we’ll go on a time machine back to December 5th at the Radisson Waterfront Hotel in Stockholm to give you key impressions from that day. We’ll begin with a live from the event clip of Copperberg’s Managing Director, Lisa Hellqvist, whose passion for this topic has been years in the making and born out of more than a decade of closely following and covering the trends in the industry. Let’s hear how she set the tone for the day.

Lisa Hellqvist, Copperberg (02:27)
Hi and welcome to the Sustainability in Service Summit, live here from the Radisson Waterfront in Stockholm. It’s our first ever sustainability and aftermarket event and we’re going to discuss today how we are transforming our aftermarket services into sustainable and profitable practices.

Nina Roper Yearwood (02:51)
Now let’s hear from the people who made this event what it was, the delegates, the speakers, and our partners. Our Commercial Director, Åsa Karphammar, took a few moments to chat with the attendees and get their biggest takeaways from the event.

So what did our attendees have to say about the event? Let’s start with Julia Ehrnberg, Portfolio Manager, Services Sustainability at Tetra Pak, who shares what stood out to her the most.

Åsa Karphammar, Copperberg (03:27)
Julia, what’s your major takeaway from Sustainability in Service event?

Julia Ehrnberg, Tetra Pak (03:32)
So I think my major takeaway is the interaction and the networking with all the people. I mean the roundtable discussions were amazing. It was really good to hear other people’s challenges and hearing about opportunities that we can bring back to Tetra Pak where I’m from. So I think it was a great mix of roundtable discussions, networking and then also listening to inspiring speakers.

Åsa Karphammar, Copperberg (03:59)
Hope to see you back soon!

Julia Ehrnberg, Tetra Pak (04:01)
I will be!

Nina Roper Yearwood (04:03)
Next up, let’s listen to Lucian Pavel, Head of Environmental Department at Klarwin Romania. He will share with us what got him excited about today.

Lucian Pavel, Klarwin Romania (04:17)
So, I’m Lucian Pavel, I’m the Head of the Environmental Department of Klarwin Romania. I’ve participated in Copperberg events since 2018. In 2019 in Sweden I was also a speaker for the first time in the conference. And since then I caught some of the best ideas for business transformation. One of them was related to servitization and transformative business. So we even came back with ideas and we transformed our business totally in such a way that we are not going to sell products anymore, we’re selling services or paper per cubic meter.

I’m happy to be here and today and yesterday, even with the pre-event, I had the strong feeling that I was among the best people in the world with a strong knowledge and I’m just very excited to go back home and to apply the new ideas that I got through these days. Thank you.

Nina Roper Yearwood (05:22)
Now you will hear from Gustav Gustavsson Klippel, Vice President of Global Services, Nordics and Baltics at Schneider Electric. In this clip, he’ll share with us his impression of the event.

Gustav Gustavsson Klippel, Schneider Electric (05:37)
My name is Gustav Gustavsson Klippel. I’m from Schneider Electric. I’ve been at a very great event today talking about service and sustainability. And it’s clear that sustainability is a topic that will stay forever and everybody has a big interest in it.

Nina Roper Yearwood (05:55)
Finally, we’ll hear from Markko Jaakkola, Manager, Board and Paper Agreement and Industrial Internet at Valmet, who tells us about what aspect of sustainability in service he’s interested in.

Åsa Karphammar, Copperberg (06:13)
Okay, Markko Jaakkola from Valmet. What is your major takeaway from today’s event?

Markko Jaakkola, Valmet (06:22)
I was very anxious to see how different companies are finding the sustainability and combining that with the services. Especially I was interested in the field services, remote services and that kind of items. I was kind of surprised at how actively many companies and how importantly they were doing it. I have kind of been struggling to find out the combination of sustainability to our services in a way and I got some new ideas on how to bring it further in my company.

Åsa Karphammar, Copperberg (06:56)
I’m happy to hear that and I hope we’ll see you again!

Markko Jaakkola, Valmet (06:59)
Okay, you can be sure! Thanks!

Nina Roper Yearwood (07:02)
That ends our quick chat with the delegates.

Nina Roper Yearwood (07:06)
Now, let’s listen to our interviews with the event speakers and partners. In this segment, we’re featuring some of our keynote speakers—the service leaders who took the stage to share their insights and experiences.

First up, we have Fredrik Fogelklou, VP Parts and Lifecycle Solutions at Kalmar, who delivered the first keynote of the day, breaking down the topic: Sustainability Driving Profitable Growth in Services, using his organization, Kalmar, as a prime example of how they’re driving this. In the next clip, he’ll share a quick breakdown of his presentation and thoughts on the event.

Fredrik Fogelklou, Kalmar (08:05)
So what I talked about was how to solve the fundamental equation of how to combine sustainability and profitability. And I talked about how services can play a unique factor in actually solving that equation. I gave two examples. I recommend, which is a digitally enabled recommendation system using AI to what we call be on the road to predictive maintenance. And then I also talked about refurbishing mobile equipment and how we can more effectively use steel structures and the CO2 that is invested when manufacturing that piece of machinery when it was built in the factory.

What was your impression from today’s event?

It was a great event, as Copperberg events usually are. What I personally find most valuable, of course, is meeting so many peers from different companies—not only here in Sweden but throughout Scandinavia and Northern Europe—and having discussions and listening in to what their problems are. What I usually find is that many of the problems they face, we also face, but they have obviously different ways of solving those problems. So by combining our experiences, our thoughts, our reflections, I usually walk away here with a long list of ideas to bring back to my team, and that’s exactly what I did today.

Nina Roper Yearwood (09:21)
Next, we have Clinten van de Merwe, SVP Head of Global Service and Project Management at Tomra, who had everyone in the room gather their pens and phones to take some notes as he presented a keynote on Empowering Field Service Teams to Drive the Resource Revolution. Here, he used Tomra Recycling as an example of how they’re doing it. What you will hear after this is Clinten telling us what this is about and then giving us his thoughts on the conversations he had that day.

Clinten van der Merwe, Tomra (10:04)
Sustainability in service is a really important part of how you drive your service organisation forward. Predominantly, people attach sustainability with more cost, more liabilities for your service organisation, but I see that completely differently—where actually it could be a differentiator for you, especially in the markets that you’re operating in.

What was your impression from today’s event?

Today’s event was really great. I think the interaction between the different tables was really great. I learned a lot, but it was also great to see the interaction from different businesses, different areas. And what I really learned today from a lot of the tables is we’re sitting at all different levels of how we see sustainability in our own organizations. And I think we need to do a bit more collaboration to drive sustainability as one of the key strategies in our organizations.

Nina Roper Yearwood (11:04)
Alright, we’ve heard from the keynote speakers, but what about the roundtable moderators? That’s where the real magic happens—during the roundtables, when fellow professionals roll up their sleeves, brainstorm on a specific topic, share insights, and give each other a new way of looking at things and approaching their challenges.

We had some incredible moderators leading these discussions and they’re here to give us the inside scoop on what went down. You will now hear from Leslie Kivioja, Regional Sales Manager at Baxter Planning, who talks about the main takeaways from the round of discussions today and her reflections on the event.

Leslie Kivioja, Baxter Planning (12:02)
The first key takeaway that we had was that clearly sustainability is on everybody’s agenda at all levels of the organization. Having said that, what we have also noticed is that there is a struggle within the organizations to find what is the best way to achieve the sustainability targets that they have presented as an organization. Overall, what we see is there’s still a lack of communication between departments, so decisions are very siloed. And there is a struggle to decide what are the projects to take on when it comes to sustainability.

What was your impression from today’s event?

The overall organization was great. We think that everybody that attended was very committed to the sustainability topic, so there was very little talk about anything else. We also noticed that it is key within the organizations to learn about each other—especially about how to implement sustainability at all areas. The overall event was very well organized, so very, very happy to have attended.

As well, the mobile app was very useful to connect with people. We definitely recommend that everybody uses it going forward. We tried to share some information as well prior to the event to get people prepared for our roundtable. So we hope that also others take use of the application.

Nina Roper Yearwood (13:31)
Coming up shortly is Pravin Patil, Key Account Director at Cyient, who lets us in on what stood out to him during his conversations today, followed by his thoughts on the event.

Pravin Patil, Cyient (13:49)
It was a great insight to get an industry insight from market leaders here. The key takeaway is what we see is digitization is a key enabler for servitization and basically on the sustainability journey of any organization. The insights we got from here will help us to build future solutions for our customers.

What was your impression from today’s event?

It was great. Actually, we learned that there are multiple business leaders from different industries. So we understand that the requirements from different customers or different sectors are basically different and we need to align the services to meet the requirements.

Nina Roper Yearwood (14:39)
Next, we have Thomas Lindahl, Client Executive at Syncron, who will give us a behind-the-scenes look at how they put together the pre-event workshop and what he took away from the summit.

Thomas Lindahl, Syncron (14:59)
To be honest, when we got the question first, what are we going to do with this? So we did a lot of research. We talked to our customers and called them and said, OK, what do you guys do using our products today in order to address sustainability? And I was actually surprised at how it works—profit and sustainability don’t need to be, you know, contradictory. And that’s what we realized when we did the workshop and said, “Jesus, this is something really cool.”

And then we said, OK, let’s not talk about Syncron. Let’s just bring the use cases that we have learned now from talking to our customers and bring that to the team and ask them, “How do you address these things?” And the feedback was amazing. So I was really happy and I learned a lot too, because I actually understand now that sustainability is part of our solution and actually how we address it.

One example: I spoke to Volvo and asked them about returns and how do you work with returns. They said 30% of our business is returns and I was like, wow, I didn’t know that—and I should know that. So I learned a lot.

Also, the feedback from the team was this was the best workshop we’ve done, and that was basically them doing it. So that was a perfect moment for us, I think.

What was your impression from today’s event?

Learnings from this is that next time I would like to be on stage or actually bring a customer on stage—that would be fantastic.

Going the day before and having this workshop be very intimate with the team and then meet them again today and follow up discussions and everything, so all in all, I like this kind of setting. It is not, you know, more of a school kind of teaching, it’s basically that you talk a lot together with the team, and the customers, and the companies. And I think that’s the way to learn. And also the attendees, they appreciated this kind of way of working.

Nina Roper Yearwood (17:11)
Coming up next is Nahom Elias, Enterprise Account Executive at TeamViewer, who shares his thoughts on attending his first ever Power of 50 event.

Nahom Elias, TeamViewer (17:29)
Yeah, I was very surprised how open and transparent they were. I think it’s because of my colleague, Jonas, who moderated, saying that we wouldn’t share any information about companies and names. So that, I think, facilitated a very open and transparent conversation.

I think it was really eye-opening to see how these organizations in Sweden are working with sustainability, with obviously service in mind, and the different challenges they are facing. And it was really cool to see how these organizations exchanged learnings and best practices.

What was your impression from today’s event?

Well, I think the great impression started quite early in the process. You were very hands-on, early. I think my mailbox was quite full quite early. But I really appreciate that you followed up and made sure that we were on top of the things that we needed to be on top of. So, it was very good. Kudos to you guys.

Nina Roper Yearwood (18:33)
And finally, we have Christopher Walldoff, Regional Sales Director at Totalmobile, who will walk us through the key themes he picked up from the conversations that day and his overall feedback on the event.

Christopher Walldoff, Totalmobile (18:55)
So I think the key takeaways from the full day have been a lot of discussions regarding aftermarket services and the importance of how we can bring the value of sustainability into the companies, but also the efficiency of doing more with less.

What was your impression from today’s event?

My impression for the full day has been that we’ve been discussing a lot of good things and good topics which are important for our planet. And I think the best part of the day was that people were very open-minded to share the challenges and problems, which made the conversations easier as the day goes by.

Nina Roper Yearwood (19:41)
We are nearing the end of the recap as we move on to the final part of our interviews, which will spotlight the speakers on our concluding panel. This is where we tied everything together, taking all the insights from the day and putting them into perspective. In the next two clips, you will hear our panel speakers discuss their main takeaways from the panel discussion—how can sustainable service and aftermarket practices be profitable? And they will also share their overall impressions.

We begin with Andrea Pelizzaro, Connected Services Manager, BU Decanters at Alfa Laval, who shares his main takeaways.

Andrea Pelizzaro, Alfa Laval (20:30)
I think it was really interesting to see many companies working towards improving their sustainability path, but also to get to know a lot of other peers in the same journey, trying to collaborate—because that’s a key in  becoming a more sustainable company. I think it’s important. I like the fact that we as a company need to focus more on nurturing the new generation to work on this aspect, because especially the new generation are keen to work for companies that are sustainable.

And another important aspect is that our customers are craving for it. So it’s really key that we bring into the market new solutions and services that definitely have sustainability as one of the main core values.

What was your impression from today’s event?

I think it was fantastic. I had a lot of interesting takeaways, and it was good to network as well and to get to know peers from other industries and where they stand in their sustainability and digital journey. So overall, I really enjoyed it and I would definitely recommend attending.

Nina Roper Yearwood (21:51)
And to close it all out, you will hear Lucas Rigotto, Chief Service Officer of GEA, tell us about what stood out to him that day.

Lucas Rigotto, GEA (22:07)
The panel was very insightful. The discussions are very much aligned with our priorities around sustainability and how much growth we can bring out of it from a CFC business point of view.

What was your impression from today’s event?

The event was very well organized. It was a pleasure to be here with all the participants and see and hear all the interesting discussions.

Nina Roper Yearwood (22:34)
And that brings us to the end of the first ever Sustainability in Service Summit. But let’s be honest, this isn’t where the real work ends. If anything, this is just where it begins.

What stood out to me listening to all these conversations was how sustainability is no longer a separate initiative. It’s becoming part of how business is done. The leaders in that room—they weren’t debating if sustainability and profitability can work together. They were focused on how to make it happen. And that’s the real shift.

So here’s the question I’ll leave you with: what’s the next step for you? What’s one idea, one strategy, one conversation from this summit that you can take back and put into motion?

And of course, if you want to be part of the next big discussion, head over to Copperberg.com to stay in the loop on upcoming events and fresh insights.

Once again, thank you for joining me today—and until next time.
