Preparing for predictive maintenance models
Editor’s note
Uptime has become the most valuable outcome in field service — yet for many organizations, it remains the hardest to define, prove, and monetize.
As customer expectations rise, regulatory pressure increases, and competition intensifies, UK organizations are being pushed to turn performance into measurable business value.
At the 2026 Field Service Forum UK in Birmingham, industry leaders and experts gathered to discuss the transition From Downtime Costs to Uptime Value, from reactive to predictive, outcome-driven service models. Here are some of the key insights we learnt.
- Outcomes, not repairs: As downtime decreases, the role of service is redefined. Success is no longer measured by response times or repair volumes, but by consistent asset performance and operational continuity. Yet as service becomes more predictive, its value becomes less visible. Avoided failures and optimized performance must be demonstrated. Without this, even the most advanced capabilities risk being undervalued.
- When value doesn’t turn into revenue: Many organizations face this critical challenge. Service models built around intervention are increasingly misaligned with a reality where fewer interventions are needed. This widens the gap between the value delivered and the value captured. Across the UK, leading organizations are beginning to close this gap by aligning commercial models with performance.
- The workforce question: Alongside technological and commercial transformation, the workforce remains a defining factor. The UK faces a well-documented skills gap, compounded by an aging engineering population. At the same time, the expectations placed on field engineers continue to expand. Customer engagement, communication, and advisory capabilities are becoming as important as technical expertise.
Thank you to our speakers, partners, and participants for contributing to the 2026 Field Service Forum UK. The dialogue demonstrated both the need for change and the opportunity ahead, not only for the UK, but for the wider European service landscape.
We look forward to continuing the conversation and welcoming you again next year.
